Highly corrected optics for wide field observation and astrophotography.
Developed in conjunction with the famous “comet hunter”, David H. Levy.
The Maksutov-Newtonian system has advantages and disadvantages when compared to the classic Newtonian due to its design. Aside from the higher price, its weight is its major downside - the thick meniscal lens on the front aperture significantly contributes to this. The Maksutov-Newtonian telescope’s main advantage over the classic Newtonian is its edge definition. Newtonian telescopes only produce completely clear images in the very centre. Outside the centre of the image, these telescopes have a dominant picture flaw - the so-called coma. This is systemic - it has nothing to do with production tolerances and applies to all brands. The coma “warps” the star point - it turns into a trail, like a small comet. This reduces focus and contrast as a result. The Maksutov-Newtonian also has this fault but at a considerably smaller scale. The result is an incredibly clear image for visual observationsas well as fordigital photography with SLR cameras. The Maksutov-Newtonian is, therefore, an almost ideal all-round telescope whichbrings the field into sharp contrast without additional correctors.
